Darkness and Light; two forces perpetually entwined with one another in an endless struggle for dominance. Yet, without Light, Darkness cannot exist. Such is also true that without Darkness, there can be no Light. And in the wake of their ceaseless conflict, Nothing is born.
Over time, as countless worlds were consumed by Darkness and the beings known as Heartless stole away the lives of many, a boy named Sora was thrown into this nameless war in one, final attempt to balance the scales. Pure in heart, the young hero vanquished the evil that tainted the worlds with the legendary weapon of Light--the Keyblade, and with the help of his friends.
Little did Sora and his friends know about the new enemy that would blossom as a result of their victory. When a person's heart has been stolen, they turn into a Heartless and seek to reap even more hearts from new victims. Yet, the empty shell that they left behind becomes something new--a Nobody. While Heartless are born from the Darkness that lies deep within every heart, the Nobodies come from its strength. Those who possess weak hearts create lesser Nobodies, and those who possess great strength create powerful Nobodies whose abilities far surpass any other. So powerful these beings are, they reign over all other Nobodies, controlling them with ease.
Organization XIII was a group of Nobodies who sought to regain their lost hearts and emotions in order to become a Somebody again--not just a Nobody. By extracting the hearts that the Heartless stole, they planned to use them to create their own Kingdom Hearts, and yet again threatened to tip the scales of balance. However, Darkness could never completely be destroyed, not even by the Organization, and retreated back to the shadows, lurking and biding its time.
To ensure Sora's victory, a secret order, formed in the name of Light, came into being, and dubbed themselves as the Order of the Forsaken Hearts. The Order, made up of thirteen Keyblade wielders, traveled throughout the worlds. They delved in and out of realms both of Light and Darkness to combat Nobodies, Heartless, and others who sought to harm the innocent. The base of their operations was hidden away on Destiny Islands, Sora’s home, and was therefore known as the Sanctuary of Hearts. It was place of serenity, established to both provide a home for the members, as well as act as a secure place to hold strategic meetings of how to best uphold the peace that Sora had offered to the worlds. But this peace couldn’t last forever.
Two years later, Organization XIII, assumed to have been disbanded and destroyed, rose once more from the working of a strange machine. This device had been constructed long before they had perished, its sole purpose being to resurrect them just in case they’d happened to be wiped out. Stronger than ever, the Organization sought revenge on the Order, blaming the members of Light and the assistance they had provided to be the cause of the fate bestowed upon on their rank.
The Order's Downfall:
Member II of the Order was assigned a hefty mission, therefore it would be expected that he would be absent for a great deal of time. At some point in his travels, he was abducted by the newly-risen Organization, and was tortured for weeks on end for information on the Sanctuary's position. Helpless and within death’s grasp, the member was taunted with the fact that no one was coming to his rescue, which only served to drown out his hopes and devour the already dwindling strength of his heart. When he was finally of no further use and disposed of, a lesser Nobody was created instead of a full-blown Nobody due to his broken heart.
Vexen, back from the abyss and eager to try out his skill for cloning after his success with Riku's Replica, was able to make another spitting image of the member. This, of course, took time, filling another year with plots and schemes, but no real action. Once completed, the member's replica was sent back to the Sanctuary with a "new mission" to discover all the other member's weaknesses and gain their trust in order to better manipulate them in order to create flaws in their defenses.
The Order's Leader was entrusted with the duty to protect the Sanctuary Doors, keeping whatever lay inside a carefully guarded secret from the other members. The clone suggested that perhaps the Leader had more in mind than to uphold peace and that he could possibly be scheming against them. The members found this to be plausible and planned to overthrow the Order to take it into their own hands. But because the clone was created with number II's likeness, the Leader was quick to trust him with a pact--a pact to mercilessly annihilate those who would betray the Order.
One by one, the members of Light fell victim to treachery and the replica's hand until there were but only a few remaining. Only at that time, when the Order was at its weakest, did the clone expose his true identity and intentions to the Leader and those who had remained loyal. But it was too late… It was then that the Organization struck, with furious wrath and a quick hand, finishing off all that was left of the Order.
But there was indeed hope.
Because the members of Light had possessed such strong hearts, Nobodies rose in their name, gaining the former members' abilities to wield Keyblades as well being granted with powers similar to those of the Organization members. Some came to realize their previous tasks and followed through with their positions in the Order. Others, like many Nobodies, strayed off in search of their purpose, wandering the lands alone and aimless. Desperate to assist the newly constructed Order, Sora and friends agreed to help out once more and put a final stop to the Organization's workings.
