As resident literary know-all of the Organization I feel compelled to express a few... Pet peeves that have been bothering me since the site's resurrection.
Let me say first of all that I have no intention of personally insulting anyone here, this isn't directed specifically at individuals but at everyone in a general sense.
My pet peeve... Well, allow me to point out the fact that I can be a bit of a grammar nazi sometimes. It may help you understand why I feel the need to go off on this rant.
But enough mincing words, I'll just come out and say it:
There is a noticeable decline in the expectations this site has for the standards of quality required for its members.
The quality I'm talking about, is that of writing. Spelling, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation. It is lacking. And while I'm also responsible for a few habitual grammar errors, such as starting a sentence with 'and', I feel compelled to point this out because frankly, it bugs the Hell out of me.
Why even bother with an application process?
Proper use of punctuation should be a requirement for a hobby that is based solely around writing. Spelling is another thing we should be able to assume from most people. A word here or there is fine, I make mistakes too, but it's not that hard to find a program with spellcheck.
Other things like tenses and grammar, I would also like to see an improvement in those. Just because it's on the internet does not mean you can slack off. It's habit forming, it's laziness. You may know how to write well "IRL" but then you put a keyboard in front of you and proper form becomes irrelevant. I know, I've seen it happen.
I can assume most of you know how to read. Roleplaying is like writing a book, but a collaborative effort. Have you ever noticed how books use punctuation? How they break up paragraphs when someone is speaking? Or at least, I should hope they do, otherwise someone needs to fire their editor.
All I'm trying to say is...
Standards. Do we have them?
